Given the centrality of thanksgiving in religious traditions, grateful people tend to be more spiritual than their less-grateful counterparts. People who are generally grateful report being more agreeable and less narcissistic compared with less grateful people. People who are more grateful also report being happier (Watkins, Woodward, Stone, & Kolts, 2003). I was ready. It comes down to reaching a certain maturity level. When I first came up with my goals, I was young and immature. As you can tell from point one, I just wanted to be young and carefree. Including all the partying and time off. I worked during the week and that’s all I was ready to commit to.You need to reach a certain maturity level if you’re going to make that change.Which includes making some drastic sacrifices, this is what stops people from going to that next level. If you honestly think you can achieve your goals and not make any changes or sacrifices, you’re going to be surprised a thousand times over.Reaching your goals means sacrifice and I wasn’t ready or willing to do that until the beginning of 2017.The following are the things I did to create that positive mindset you need in order to set yourself up to achieve your goals. Become the best human being you can possibly be. This bold statement requires our continuous motivation for generosity, integrity, and fairness, especially when our mood is low and competition is tough. Be honest. How often have you found yourself doing one or more of the following: hide ideas so that they don’t get pinched by others? Hold back on complimenting a colleague’s achievement because you wished it was your own? Or fail to pass on exciting opportunities in order to limit the success of others? These behaviours are signs of fear and envy. They are unnecessary, because ideas only come to life through communication and action. Likewise, compliments and encouragement not only create energy in others, but equally enhance your own visibility. Giving away those gifts and promoting others are acts of self-transcendence and will go a long way to enhancing your personal growth.   Credit: Jeremy Bishop The Rinella Learning Center has programs and services which are organized to help students with varied academic preparation and backgrounds learn to do what is necessary to perform at acceptable levels inside and outside the classroom. We all have strengths and weaknesses, and we tend to favor thinking about and doing things we’re good at. Focusing on the positive is normal, and in many ways, healthy. What sets us back is avoiding challenges because of a fear of failure. Performing this type of self-assessment has two major components: assessing strengths and weaknesses is one. The other is figuring out where you currently fall on the spectrum of fixed to growth mindset. Our action items are identifying where we need to make more effort and, more importantly, determining the best tactics. Effort alone isn’t enough, because it can be misguided and ineffective. The truth is, no one has a growth mindset 100% of the time – ultimately, the goal is to make sure you don’t allow fixed mindset moments to waylay progress. We feel safe when we do not have to change the daily routine. Remember that old phrase, “Got to keep up with the Jones’?” Guess what I realized? The Jones’ were in a bad financial shape as the rest of us. They were not trying something new; they were settling for a negative status quo. And that, my friend, was the moment that the proverbial light went off in my head. Residential Services Be a Mature Teenager I want to adopt a stoic attitude, but I am too anxious. Where do I begin? The more we understand how we work, the more we can purposefully use our thoughts and actions for our own benefit. Date: Optimism can have an effect on a person’s immune system, as well. In one study, elderly adults were immunized for influenza (Kohut, Cooper, Nickolaus, Russell, & Cunnick, 2002). Two weeks later, their immune response to the vaccination was measured. Greater optimism predicted greater antibody production and better immune outcomes. Five studies have also investigated optimism and disease progression in people infected with HIV. Ironson and colleagues (2005) found, in a large sample, that optimism and positive HIV immune response were linearly related: people highest in optimism had the best suppression of viral load and a greater number of helper T cells, both important parts of the progression of HIV. Furthermore, another study found that optimistic men who were HIV-positive had lower mortality over a longitudinal study (Blomkvist et al., 1994). Another study that examined the link between optimism and immune system functioning was conducted by Segerstrom and Sephton (2010). This study examined a sample of entering law students over five time points in their first year of law school. Dispositional optimism (the tendency to be generally optimistic about your life) and optimism about law school, in particular, were assessed, along with measures of positive and negative affect (to determine whether any relationships between optimism and immune system functioning could be better explained through positive or negative affect). This study found that optimism predicted superior cell-mediated immunity, an important part of the immune system’s response to infectious agents. Furthermore, an individual’s changes in optimism levels from time point to time point were associated with changes in immune functioning: as optimism increased from one time point to another, immune function increased, as well. Furthermore, negative affect did not predict changes in immune function. What this means is that optimism appears to have a unique value among the factors that compose a person’s immune system. Taylor and colleagues (1992) found that optimism predicted better psychological coping post-HIV-diagnosis, as well as more perceived control over personal health and well-being. Thus, it appears that an optimistic outlook appears not only to be strongly positively related to a healthy immune system but also to better outcomes for people with compromised immune systems. Event Navigation Alternatively, in a growth mindset, people have an underlying belief that their learning and intelligence can grow with time and experience. When people believe they can get smarter, they realize that their effort has an effect on their success, so they put in extra time, leading to higher achievement. Keep sight of this reason, and don’t let yourself turn the experience into an unpleasant one.
